Basins and Tapware

Basins come in many shapes and sizes. They may be on a pedestal, or they may be hung from the wall, semi-recessed into a cabinet or be self-rimming (meaning they sit into a hole in the bench-top). They could also be under-counter, which enables them to sit under the bench top of the vanity unit.

Taps can come out of the basin (one tap hole for a mixer or three tap holes for the conventional hot and cold plus a spout), or they can sit behind the basin (usually in a self-rimming or under-counter situation). This is called “hob-mounted” and you may need to have a larger spout to cater for the extra distance from the spout to the centre of the basin. Wall mounted tap sets are also available with longer spouts.

Modern taps are available with traditional washer (or jumper valve) inside, or they may have ceramic discs. Ceramic discs are more expensive but they make taps easier to turn on and off, have a longer life and are guaranteed not to leak for a longer period.

Water pressure is another consideration and in some instances, local authorities will require that pressure-limiting valves be fitted to reduce risk of damage to taps and water leaks. Isolating cocks may also be necessary. Your plumber or local water authority would be able to provide precise requirements for your area.
